RavenWord Transcendence Review

Ravenword-cdRAVENWORD is a Symphonic Power metal band hailing from Italy, inspired by the novel The Raven (E.A.Poe) and the aim to recreate Symphonic Power metal that is romantic and decadently poetic. The band was conceived in 2007 by keyboardist and composer Davide Scuteri; after a short period of activity, the band went into a hiatus until 2016, when vocalist Chiara Tricarico (Sound Storm, Moonlight Haze, ex-Temperance), drummer Michele Olmi (Skeletoon, Chronosfear) and guitarist and bassist Cesare Ferrari (Choir Of Veritas) joined the band.

About the Album

Transcendence is the band’s latest studio album and is a collection of thirteen melodic, symphonic power metal songs with big powerful choruses and beautiful melodies. The styles range from traditional power and gothic metal with modern and operatic vocals and remarkable choirs. The album’s epic nature can be heard, and the band has undoubtedly spent time crafting each song with care to the details.

“Life Is in Your Hands” has driving drums and bass with a stellar guitar melody and Ferrari playing. Tricarico’s strong vocals enter and elevate the energy. Scuteri’s keyboard solo is spectacular; it is nice to hear a gothic metal band with such a strong soloist at the keyboard. The vocal harmonies and choir are powerful. The riff that marks the halfway point is memorable and dark. A beautiful piano interlude relaxes the energy before we retake flight. Ravenword’s ability to build a song through multiple sounds, feels, and textures are among the best.

“Crimson Lake” opens with a chugging guitar part and flowing keyboards over an active bass and drum feel. Tricarico’s singing style is morravenword-pice operatic on this selection; her vocal tone is still rich and technically sound throughout. The riff builds as Scuteri’s keyboard soar in the background. The ever-shifting backing music feels has purpose and builds the song’s character. The halfway point marks the entrance of male guttural singing, answered by Tricarico’s angelic flow. Ferrari’s flawless execution of rapid arpeggios during the guitar interlude raises the energy. Scuteri’s classical style piano interlude is a quick breath before the driving power continues. At over six minutes in length, the music never stalls, and Scuteri’s compositional skills are a big part of that reality.

In Conclusion

Transcendence is another bold musical statement by RavenWord. The beautiful singing, attention to compositional details, and an ever-changing band sound without losing continuity are crucial to Transcendence success as a project. RAVENWORD is a Symphonic Power metal that is a cut above in a very crowded field.
