by Brice Boreman
Jane Monheit’s new single “Silver Bells,” released through CLUB44 RECORDS, invites us to experience the holiday season in a distinctly Latin-inspired jazz setting. From the first note, Monheit sets the stage for a warm celebration, her voice effortlessly floating above the cha-cha rhythm laid down by an outstanding ensemble. Originally released as a bonus on the vinyl edition of her 2022 album The Merriest, this track now makes its digital debut, spreading Monheit’s uniquely joyful holiday spirit to a broader audience.
“Silver Bells” opens with Karl McComas Reichl’s bass setting the foundation, delivering an inviting Latin bass line that is soon joined by the spirited percussion of Kevin Winard and Tiki Pasillas. This rhythmic introduction forms a vibrant setting, establishing the festive mood before Max Haymer’s piano and Rick Montalbano’s drums kick in, further underscoring the cha-cha rhythmic foundation. The Latin jazz character can be heard in Monheit’s voice as it glides over the rhythm with warmth and precision. She displays her creative phrasing that effortlessly settles into the pocket while bringing charming variations to the familiar melody.
The beauty of this arrangement lies in its gradual development. The musicians build the atmosphere in layers, each instrumental line contributing to the festive ambiance while making space for Monheit’s lush vocals to shine. Her interpretation is filled with playful jazz embellishments, giving this seasonal classic a new lift. Monheit’s vocal harmonies and the subtle counterpoint introduced in the latter part of the arrangement reveal her technical agility and provide even more character to this version.
This version of Silver Bells evokes imagery of twinkling lights and cozy gatherings while maintaining a refined musicality that makes it stand apart from other holiday recordings. “Silver Bells” is a beautiful reflection of Jane Monheit’s skill as a vocalist, as her interpretation elevates this timeless standard. The combination of Latin jazz rhythms, her expressive vocal performance, and the musicianship of the ensemble make this rendition a joyful addition to the holiday program.
